Lawsuit Over Sale of Houston LODD Property Prompts Claims of Fraudulent Conveyance

An effort to sell the former Southwest Inn has resulted in a lawsuit by the prospective buyer, as well as claims by a local activist that the transaction is an attempt to hide assets from the families of the four firefighters who died there.

Families of Houston LODDs Sue Motorola and Scott

The families of three Houston firefighters killed in the 2013 Southwest Inn fire have filed another wrongful death lawsuit, this time naming Motorola and Scott Safety as defendants. The suit filed Monday accuses Motorola and Scott of negligence, gross negligence and product liability for selling products that are dangerously defective and contain design defects.

Deaths of Two Children in Fire Leads to Riots in India

A fire chief and a firefighter in northern India have been suspended following the fire deaths of two children that sparked riots over the poor fire response. The fire occurred in Etah, Uttar Pradesh last Tuesday. Their deaths sparked mob violence as angry residents threw stones at police and set three fire trucks and one police vehicle on fire.

Cal Fire Sues Property Owner To Recoup $25 Million in Costs

Cal Fire is suing a property owner and two caretakers in hopes of recouping over $25 million in costs associated with fighting the Mountain Fire back in July, 2013. The fire burned over 27,000 acres, destroyed 23 structures, and required 260 engines, 20 helicopters, 12 fix wing aircraft, and 3500 firefighters before being brought under control.

Arizona Not Liable to Homeowners for Property Lost in the Yarnell Fire

People in the wildland fire community will be familiar with the Yarnell Hill Fire of 2013. This fire occurred in 2013 and led to the death of 19 firefighters, all members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots team. Only one member of the team survived. Apart from this tragedy a number of homes were lost to the fire and homeowners sued the Arizona State Forestry Division (ASFD) claiming that the division ‘negligently failed to protect them from harm that resulted from the Fire’.

Kentucky Fire Department Fined $25K Over Electrocution LODD

The State of Kentucky has fined the Campbellsville Fire and Rescue Department $25,000 following it’s investigation into the Ice Bucket Challenge related death of Captain Tony Grider last August. The incident occurred as firefighters were assisting the Campbellsville University marching band by spraying them with water from an aerial platform as part of an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser.
