Michigan Lieutenant Alleges Race Discrimination

A paid-on-call lieutenant in Michigan has filed suit claiming his fire department discriminated against him on account of his race. Lieutenant Gary Reid alleges that the Farmington Hills Fire Department changed the requirements for promotion and transferred him to prevent him from promoting.

Massachusetts Cancels Promotional Exams for Fire Departments

Fire departments in Massachusetts are in an uproar after the Human Resource Division of the state’s civil service system announced a cancellation of all promotional testing following a ruling by a Superior Court judge that a promotional exam administered to police officers was discriminatory.

Oregon Lieutenant Sues Claiming He Was Forced To Withdraw From Promotional Process

An Oregon lieutenant who was pressured to remove himself from a promotional list for captain, has filed suit alleging discrimination on the basis of disability, veterans’ status, and whistleblower status. Daniel Krug filed suit in Multnomah County Circuit Court naming the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue District and Division Chief Gregory Ladrow as defendants.

Chicago Sued by Twelve Fire Lieutenants Alleging Racially Discriminatory Captain’s Process

Twelve African American fire lieutenants with the Chicago Fire Department have filed suit claiming they were discriminated against on account of their race in the scoring of a promotional process for captain in 2017.

Two Tulsa Chiefs Sue Claiming Gender Discrimination

Two chief officers in the Tulsa Fire Department have filed suit claiming they were passed over for promotion because of their gender, and retaliated against after they complained. Greta Hurt and Julie Lynn filed suit in US District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma alleging a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Stamford Settles Suit Clearing Way for Promotions

A lawsuit challenging changes to the promotional process within the Stamford Fire Department, has been settled. Lieutenants Kevin Dingle and Bruce Wagoner, and firefighters Robert Pickering and Brian Whitbread filed the suit in 2018 challenging the city’s use of rounding and/or banding scores on promotional exams in 2017.

California Firefighter Sues Alleging Race Discrimination

A California firefighter who was demoted from probationary captain to firefighter engineer, has filed suit alleging race discrimination, retaliation, constructive termination, emotional distress, and FMLA violations. JuDon Cherry, who identifies himself in the complaint as an “African American male”, filed suit against the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

NJ Firefighter Settles Discrimination Suit for $275k

A New Jersey firefighter who claimed he was subjected to “severe and pervasive” race discrimination culminating in his being passed-over for promotion, has agreed to settle his claims for $275k. Chris Williams sued the City of Vineland and Fire Chief Luigi Tramontana in 2019.

Court Rules Against Alabama Firefighter’s Discrimination Suit

A lawsuit filed by an Alabama firefighter who claims his termination was due to his race and military service, has been dismissed. Deatri J. Larry filed suit in 2019 claiming his salary was reduced, he was passed over for promotion, and he was ultimately terminated after returning from a combat deployment.

An Atlanta Fire Captain who was suspended for fifteen days over patient care issues, has filed suit claiming her discipline and the city’s failure to promote her to an EMS supervisor’s position was retaliation for a gender discrimination complaint she filed. Captain Andrea Nicholle Brock filed suit in US District Court alleging gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation.

Louisiana Appellate Court Upholds Denial of Retro Pay to District Chiefs

The Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal has upheld a decision by the New Orleans Civil Service Commission that denied retroactive compensation to four recently promoted New Orleans district chiefs. Captains Paul Hellmers, Edward Poole, Jay Fielding and Michael Salvaggio were promoted to district chief in 2019.

Maine Investigator Claims Retaliation and Gender Discrimination

An investigator with the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office has filed suit claiming he was denied a promotion in retaliation for his having testified before the state legislature on a pension bill, and on account of his gender. Mark J. Roberts filed suit naming the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Fire Marshal Joseph E. Thomas as defendants.
