Motorola Sued for $145 Million Over Death of Houston Fire Captain

The widow of a Houston fire captain who was seriously injured in the Southwest Inn fire in 2013, and who died in 2017, has filed suit against Motorola Solutions, Inc. alleging deficiencies in the radio system contributed to her husband’s injuries and ultimately his death. Jacki Dowling filed suit in Harris County District Court on February 18, 2019.

The widow of a Wisconsin firefighter killed in a massive gas explosion in July has filed suit against four companies alleged to have contributed to the blast. Sun Prairie Fire Captain Cory Barr was killed and several other firefighters injured in the explosion that followed a natural gas leak caused when contractor struck a gas main.

Two Pennsylvania firefighters have filed suit against an engineering firm and an engineer who they claim are responsible for a floor collapse that killed two other firefighters during a mop-up operations at a fire scene. Answer: Civil rights suits are viewed by some attorneys as a strategic “end around” the tort defenses that fire departments would typically raise in cases like this.
