Judge Dismisses Race Discrimination Claims of Hartford Firefighter

A US District Court judge has dismissed the race discrimination claims of a Hartford firefighter, leaving intact for now additional age discrimination claims he also brought. Tony Milledge filed suit last year in US District Court accusing the City of Hartford and the Hartford Fire Department, with race and age discrimination.

FDNY Prevails in Second Discrimination Suit by Gordon Springs

An FDNY firefighter who filed suit in 2017 alleging he was sexually harassed and discriminated against on account of his race, has had a second lawsuit against the department and several of his colleagues dismissed. Gordon Springs claims he was sexual assaulted in 2015 at the Midtown Manhattan station nicknamed The Cavemen.

Washington State Supreme Court Allows Staffing Decision to Stand

Three Terminated Mass Firefighters Sue Claiming Retaliation

Three Massachusetts firefighters who were terminated just before Christmas last year have filed separate lawsuits claiming their firing was retaliation for cooperating with a state police investigation involving their current fire chief. Cleveland Lieutenants Allege Disparate Impact Bias on Captain’s Exam

Twenty-four fire lieutenants with the Cleveland Fire Department are suing the city alleging that the results of a recent captain’s exam produced such a statistical imbalance that it violates federal anti-discrimination guidelines. While such an claim, referred to as disparate impact discrimination, is hardly precedent setting, what is unusual is that white firefighters are making it.

Palm Beach County Social Media Suit Dismissed

A lawsuit filed last year by two captains with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue after they were disciplined for social media posts, has been dismissed. Captain AJ O’Laughlin and Captain Crystal Little filed suit in Palm Beach County Circuit Court last May. It was later removed to federal court.

Trouble Again in Trenton

Three Trenton city councilwomen who have been at war with the city’s law department, have been appointed to investigate the handling of a lawsuit brought by a former fire captain. Councilwomen Kathy McBride, Marge Caldwell Wilson and Robin Vaughn were appointed last week by the full council to serve as an investigative sub-committee into a suit brought by former captain Michael Strycharz.

Prosecutors Decline to Charge Cleveland Fire Chief

Cleveland.com is reporting that Cleveland Fire Chief Angelo Calvillo will not face criminal charges stemming from his collecting of signatures for Mayor Frank Jackson’s re-election campaign. Prosecutors were looking into whether Chief Calvillo violated a city charter provision involving political activities.
