Newark Firefighter Loses Appeal of Termination

A Newark firefighter who was terminated in 2016 after falling asleep in a firehouse kitchen, missing a run, and testing positive for drugs and alcohol, has lost his appeal to the Appellate Division of the NJ Superior Court. Antonio Cruz had asked the court to overturn a decision by the NJ Civil Service Commission

Meanwhile in Canada: Firefighters Caught Having Sex On Duty In Fire Chief’s Office Reinstated

A fire captain and a dispatcher who were terminated for having sex in the fire chief’s office while on duty have been ordered reinstated by a British Columbia Arbitration Panel. Fire Captain Brent Bond and dispatcher Cara-Leigh Manahan were terminated from the Vernon Fire Department last year.

Detroit Firefighters Sue to Block Bodily Fluid Clean Up Policy

Detroit Firefighters Association IAFF Local 344 has filed suit against the city in an effort to block implementation of a policy requiring firefighters to wash down blood and bodily fluids at accident and medical scenes. The lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court seeks to block implementation of the “Bodily Fluid Aftermath Cleanup" policy.

Arbitrator Upholds Termination of Florida Firefighter For Gang Affiliation

The termination of a Florida firefighter for violating a gang affiliation prohibition has been upheld by an arbitrator. Clinton Neal Walker was fired by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue in January 2018. He was the first county employee to be charged with violating a new ordinance that prohibits employees from being affiliated with a criminal organization.

Houston Police-Fire Pay Parity Bill Goes Into Effect

Harris County Judge Randy Wilson has refused to extend a temporary restraining order blocking implementation of a voter-approved initiate to guaranty pay parity between Houston police and firefighters. The initiate known as Proposition B was adopted in November by a 59% majority at the behest of Houston firefighters.

New Haven Firefighters Prevail in Dispute With State Association

A Connecticut Superior Court judge has ruled that New Haven Firefighters IAFF Local 825 successfully disassociated itself from the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut, Inc. and is not liable for dues after January 1, 2017. The parties have been at odds for several years with Local 825 alleging it was not a member of the UPFFA, and the UPFFA claiming it was.

Philadelphia and IAFF Local 22 Prevail in Suit by Terminated Firefighter

A Philadelphia firefighter who was terminated following his second conviction for driving under the influence, has lost his civil suit against the city and Philadelphia Firefighters IAFF Local 22. Andrew Addeo was fired on September 28, 2015, following his arrest and conviction earlier in the year. Addeo had previously been charged with DUI in 2012.

KCK Firefighter Loses Residency Suit

A Kansas firefighter who was terminated for violating the city’s residency policy, has lost his federal court lawsuit to get his job back. Todd Coleman was fired by the Kansas City Fire Department who claimed he spent more than 50% of his time outside of Wyandotte County.

San Antonio Chief Disciplines Union President For Wearing Union Uniform

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood has reprimanded IAFF 624 Local President Chris Steele for wearing a uniform that closely resembled a fire department uniform at a political event. The incident occurred on September 20, 2018 at a rally for a proposed charter amendment.

Missouri Local Files Three Suits Over Pay Issues

Firefighters in St. Charles, Missouri have filed three suits against the city alleging the city has been underpaying them. St. Charles Firefighters IAFF Local 757 claims the city owes them over $300,000 and the dispute is driving firefighters out of the department.

Nevada Firefighter Union Sued By Mayoral Candidate

A Nevada man who ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of the town of Fernley has filed suit against a firefighters’ union that he claims defamed him during the campaign. Ryan Hanan filed suit last month accusing IAFF Local 4547, North Lyon County Firefighters Association, of defaming him on Facebook by posting false statements about his service as a firefighter.

RI Union President Sues Town

Another lawsuit has been filed in the ongoing battle between the firefighters and the town administration in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. IAFF Local 3328 union president William Perry filed suit against the town, Town Council President Sue Cieniki, Town Manager Gail Corrigan, and Finance Director Linda Dykeman alleging violations of the Rhode Island Civil Rights Act and the Rhode Island Fair Employment Practices Act.

Illinois Appeals Court Agrees With Union That Residency Award Invalid

An Illinois appeals court has upheld a decision that a firefighter’s union cannot be compelled to bargain over a residency requirement. The case involved the Oak Lawn Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 3405 and the Village of Oak Lawn, who were negotiating a collective bargaining agreement for 2015-2017.

Amsterdam Firefighters Believed To Be Behind Death Threats To Fire Chief

Prosecutors in the Netherlands are investigating death threats that have been made against the fire chief in Amsterdam. Leen Schaap, a former police chief, was brought in as fire chief to address some serious cultural problems within the Amsterdam Fire Department.
