Mississippi Fire Chief Sues for Reverse Discrimination

A Mississippi fire chief is among three local officials who claim they were fired by the city of Clarksdale last year on account of their race. Fire Chief Obert Douglas along with Municipal Judge Joseph Cobb Gibbs, and City Attorney Curtis Boschert were fired on July 10, 2017, ten days after Mayor Chuck Espy took office.

Fire District May Refuse to Respond to Property Outside Its Response Area

The Rhode Island Supreme Court has upheld the right of a fire district to refuse to respond to an address outside of its designated response district. The suit was brought in 2015 by the Dunn’s Corner Fire District seeking a declaratory judgment that it was not required to respond to the former Bradford Dying Association property.

Detroit EMT Convicted of Wilful Neglect

Former Detroit Fire Department EMT Ann Marie Thomas was convicted of willful neglect charges for failing to respond to an incident in 2015 that led to the death of an eight-month-old girl. Thomas was reportedly less than a mile from the scene and took six minutes to drive there. She then parked her unit on a street corner away from the residence while waiting for other units to arrive.

$2 Million Wrongful Death Suit Filed Over Gatlinburg Wildland Fire

The family of a man killed in the wildland fire that tore through Gatlinburg, Tennessee last year has filed suit against Sevier County and the city. Deborah Spillers, the daughter of Gatlinburg pastor Rev. Ed Taylor, filed suit Monday in Sevier County Circuit Court accusing the city and county of negligence. The suit seeks $2 million in damages.

South Carolina Fire Chief Indicted Over Asbestos in Station

The fire chief and the city administrator of Marion, South Carolina have been indicted for having allowed firefighters and members of the public to use a fire department building containing asbestos. Fire Chief Ralph Walton Cooper III and city administrator Alan Thomas Ammons were indicted on November 2, 2017 .

Detroit EMT Charged Criminally With Neglect of Duty

The Detroit Fire Department EMT who refused to respond to the scene of a baby having trouble breathing in 2015, today was charged criminally with willful neglect of duty. Ann Marie Thomas was fired June 24, 2015 for her role in the May 30, 2015 incident that led to the death of I'Nayah Wright-Trussel.
