An FDNY firefighter is facing charges that he brazenly stole a $2,500 pickup truck bed cover while on duty last week. Aleksandr Swieszek, 40, a firefighter assigned to Engine Company 206 in Brooklyn, is charged with grand larceny and criminal possession stolen property.
Swieszek is accused of driving up to a pickup truck parked outside Exclusive Collision Repair about 2:30 a.m. last Wednesday, parking in the middle of the road, and stealing the bed cover. He was on duty driving a marked FDNY SUV at the time. The theft was caught in its entirety on video.
Swieszek took roughly eight minutes to disassemble the cover and place it in the FDNY vehicle. He made no effort to conceal what he was doing.
The NY Daily News has a video of the theft, but I was unable to get it to embed here. Here is a link to their coverage.
The Daily News quoted the owner of Executive Collision as saying:
- He took the cover off in just eight minutes
- He carefully unscrewed it and everything without damaging anything.
- If he didn’t steal from me, I would have given him a job.
