Pennsylvania Firefighter Charged With Embezzling Funds From Fire Company

A Pennsylvania firefighter has been charged with stealing $140,000 from his fire department. John Montgomery, 76, was arraigned today on two felony counts of theft and two misdemeanor counts of misappropriation of funds. He accused of stealing funds from the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department.

The theft was discovered during an audit by the Pennsylvania Auditor General’s Office, who also found poor recordkeeping by the fire company and over $249,877 in unaccounted-for money. The thefts occurred between January 2010 and April as Montgomery wrote checks to himself or cash.
