Cleveland Investigating Cheating On Promotional Exam

Cleveland officials are investigating allegations of cheating on a fire department promotional exam. The test was administered last summer to 147 members seeking promotion to lieutenant and captain.

No details have been released about how the cheating may have occurred. The process included both a written and an oral component administered by an outside contractor, EB Jacobs. The investigation has led to a delay in promotions.

Cleveland.com quoted IAFF Local 93 President Tim Corcoran as saying:

  • “Unfortunately there’s a few ways the test could be compromised.”
  • “There’s no foolproof method.”
  • “We’re not concerned with the delay.”
  • “We just want to make sure the test is being handled properly. We of course want our people promoted but our biggest concern is making sure the test is legitimate and everyone has a fair opportunity. There needs to be a level of transparency in place for these things.”
