Louisiana Pension System Files Suit Against Two Retired But Working Chiefs

The Louisiana Firefighters’ Retirement System has filed suit against two fire service executives who are working at jobs similar to those they had prior to their retirement while collecting state pensions.

The ongoing dispute involves Jefferson Parish Fire Director Joseph Greco and Assistant Director David Saunders. Both men served with the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department. According to the Jefferson Parish web site:

  • The Jefferson Parish East Bank Consolidated Fire Department is a 200 member full time paid fire department. The members work three shifts consisting of 24 hours on duty 24 hours off duty for five rotations then six days off. The department is overseen by the Director of Fire Services. Civil Service is governed by the Jefferson Parish State Civil Service Board.

The Jefferson Parish Firefighters Association Local 1374, has characterized the arrangement “pension fraud”, and objected to the directors taking home combined pension and salaries that total over $160,000 each while firefighters have a base pay of just $21,995.
