Illinois Fire Department Cited by OSHA Over Mayday Bailout

An Illinois fire department is facing eight OSHA citations following an investigation into a 2021 fire that resulted in three firefighters being hospitalized. The fire in a mixed commercial – apartment building in Beardstown led to a mayday and bailout by the three firefighters, each of whom fell approximately 21 feet.

Illinois LODD Leads to OSHA Citations

Two Illinois fire departments have been issued citations by the Illinois Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration, over a line of duty death fire that occurred in December, 2021. That fire claimed the life of Lieutenant Garrett Ramos of the Sterling Fire Department.

Fine Against Washington Fire Department For Understaffing Upheld

An OSHA fine against a Washington state fire department for understaffing has been upheld by the state’s Department of Labor and Industries. The Camas-Washougal Fire Department was cited for violating OSHA’s two-in two-out requirement at a house fire last March. The first arriving engine was staffed with two firefighters.

Three lawsuits filed last year by the families of twelve of the nineteen firefighters killed in the Yarnell Hill fire have been settled for $670,000 along with assurances that new wildland firefighting procedures will be implemented by the state of Arizona

Hartford Fire Cited by Conn OSHA

The Hartford Fire Department has been cited by Conn OSHA for five serious violations in connection with the October 7, 2014 line of duty death of FF Kevin Bell. Bell died at a house fire that seriously injured a second firefighter, Jason Martinez. Martinez leapt from the second floor to escape rapidly developing fire conditions.

NC OSHA Cites Fire Department

The Winston-Salem Fire Department has been cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Division of the North Carolina Department of Labor over three OSHA violations. Two of the citations were considered serious, incurring $3250 fines each. The third was consider not serious and no fine was imposed.
