Nebraska City Settles Second of Three Harassment Suits for $500k

The City of Lincoln, Nebraska has settled a second lawsuit brought by an officer alleging retaliation for reporting harassment of female firefighters. Captain Brian Giles will be receiving $500,000 in settlement of his federal lawsuit that claimed he was passed over for promotion to battalion chief on account of his having reported sexual harassment.

The US District Court for the District of Kansas has granted summary judgment to the City of Topeka in a suit brought by a female firefighter alleging she was subjected to a hostile work environment and retaliation. An Ohio jury ruled today that one of two female Toledo firefighters involved in a lawsuit that stretches back over a decade, was discriminated against. A federal court jury in Denver has awarded a former captain who alleged sexual harassment and retaliation, $146,000 in compensatory damages. Colley Fisher claims her termination in 2015 was retaliation for her complaints about the “boys club” atmosphere within the Denver Fire Department. The jury agreed, handing down its’ verdict on January 16, 2019.
