Too Many Fire Law Headlines

It seems like each week I am only able to scratch the surface of the fire law news. This week is no exception, but I wanted to point out two additional noteworthy cases. The first involves the settlement of the city’s portion of the Kansas City, Missouri fatal apparatus accident case. Utah Fire Department Accused of Destroying House

A Utah fire department is being sued for allegedly destroying a man’s home last July as part of a training exercise. Greg Young filed suit in US District Court for the District of Utah claiming that the South Jordan Fire Department used his home on South Gold Dust Drive without his permission, and literally destroyed it.

Rhode Island City Seeks to Recoup Overpayment to Firefighters

The City of Warwick has filed suit against Warwick Firefighters, IAFF Local 2748 claiming that certain current and retired firefighters owe the city $385,000 in overpayments that the city allegedly made back in 2013. The payments were reportedly made pursuant to a memorandum of understanding that was never duly ratified by the city council and signed by the mayor.

Illinois Lieutenant Claims Retaliation

An Illinois fire lieutenant who claims he was retaliated against after reporting sexually harassing behavior in his department, has filed suit alleging retaliation, hostile work environment, and whistleblower violations. Steven Edwards filed suit against the Mount Prospect Fire Department, three chiefs and the HR Director.

LA City Firefighter Sues Claiming Continuing Reverse Discrimination

A white male Los Angeles City firefighter who sought a restraining order against a black female firefighter in 2017, and sued the city for reverse discrimination in 2018, has filed another suit against the city claiming he continues to be adversely affected and retaliated against. James Sharlein filed suit against the city last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
