Three Federal Court Settlements in the Fire law News

There are three federal court settlements in the fire law news today. The first is the settlement of a lawsuit filed by an Ohio firefighter who lost an eye in 2008 in a fireworks accident. Despite being cleared to return to work by his doctor, Stow firefighter Anthony Rorrer was determined to be unfit for duty. He sued claiming unlawful discrimination under the Americans With Disabilities Act.

RI Fire District Settles Public Records Suit for $1500

A Rhode Island fire district has agreed to pay a $1500 fine for violating the state’s public records law. The Manville Fire District was accused of failing to respond to a public records request back in 2014. Attorney General Peter Kilmartin filed suit against Manville to enforce the requirements of the APRA.

Fire Departments in NJ and Maryland Settle Suits

Settlements involving two fire departments are in the fire law news today. In New Jersey, a sexual harassment suit against the Franklin Township Fire District No. 3 has been settled. In Maryland, a wrongful death suit brought by the family of a 17-year old who died at a fire department sponsored carnival has been settled.

Paterson Approves $350k Settlement in Reverse Discrimination Suit

A captain in the Paterson, New Jersey Fire Department who was passed over for promotion to battalion chief in 2010 because of his race, has been given a $350,000 settlement. Joseph Parkin claims that at 11:30 am on September 10th, 2010 he was told he was going to be promoted to battalion chief later that day at 5:00 p.m.

Florida Fire Department Settles Wrongful Termination Suit

Two Florida firefighters have received $80,000 settlements in their wrongful termination suit. Flagler Beach firefighters Shane Wood and Jacob Bissonnette were terminated last year over an incident that occurred in their station on Christmas day, 2012. Both were off duty at the time, but allegedly were in possession of alcohol in the station
