Florida Firefighter Awarded $850k

A Tallahassee firefighter who was terminated in 2013 has been awarded $850,000 in damages for retaliation, whistleblower violations, and disability discrimination. Mark DeCarlo claimed he was disciplined and ultimately terminated in retaliation for reporting safety issues within the Tallahassee Fire Department, and over a perceived psychological disability.

Ohio Firefighter Files Sexual Harassment Suit

An Ohio firefighter who claims she has been subjected to years of harassment and discrimination has filed suit against her department and her fire chief. Amie Morningstar filed suit last week in US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio naming the Circleville Fire & EMS Department, the City of Circleville, and Fire Chief Marc Zingarelli.

Oakland Firefighter’s Race Discrimination Claims Rejected by Jury

A federal court jury has ruled against an African American firefighter who had claimed to have been the victim of race discrimination. Ronald El-Malik Curtis claims that his firefighter co-workers harassed him because of his race. El-Malik Curtis alleged “he was subjected to a hostile work environment... experienced retaliation because he reported the racial discrimination; and that the City failed to prevent the discrimination.”

A Kentucky fire captain has filed suit against her department alleging gender-based discrimination over disciplinary charges that were filed against her last year. Middletown Fire Protection District Captain Natalie Taylor was suspended last December over comments she made about the department’s leadership at a November 20, 2014 officer's training session.

A veteran captain with the Oakland Fire Department who claims he was passed over for promotion to battalion chief has filed suit alleging discrimination and retaliation based upon his Native American and Hispanic descent. Captain Joseph Torres claims that Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed purposefully bypassed him in favor of caucasian and black candidates.

NH Firefighter Claims Retaliation

A New Hampshire firefighter is suing his employer claiming he has been subject to retaliation ever since he reported a police officer for sexual harassment. Epsom firefighter Richard Bilodeau alleges that officer Brian Michael “sexually assaulted him” back in 2010 in a pizza parlor. The assault alleged happened in front of a fire captain and the police chief.

Patterson Settles Retaliation Suit With Dispatcher For $80k

A New Jersey dispatcher who sued the Patterson Fire Department in federal court over harassment he sustained after reporting misconduct by two firefighters has received an $80,000 settlement. Robert Connizzo claimed that co-workers harassed, assaulted, and retaliated against him for informing superior officers about a conversation he overheard on a recorded line.

A Michigan fire chief who was wrongly accused of criminal misconduct and terminated, has filed suit against a township alleging defamation, malicious prosecution, and retaliation for testifying in an earlier case. Marquette Township fire chief Bob Sims was suspended last December and terminated in February, 2015.

An Evansville, Indiana district chief who filed suit in federal court last year alleging whistleblower and First Amendment violations has agreed to settle his claims for $13,750. District Chief Keith Jarboe sued claiming he had been retaliated against after bringing to light certain payroll/overtime related improprieties. Chief Jarboe claims his retaliation consisted of a demotion from district chief to safety officer.
