Fatal Detroit Fire Apparatus Crash Must Go to Trial

Detroit Sued For Negligence in Fighting Fire Where Firefighters Posed for Photo

A Detroit property owner whose building caught fire on New Years Eve has filed suit against the city’s fire department over a photo depicting a group of firefighters posing in front of the blazing home. The photo of Deonte Higginbotham’s burning house went viral and prompted questions about why firefighters were posing rather than extinguishing the fire.

Detroit Firefighters Sue to Block Bodily Fluid Clean Up Policy

Detroit Firefighters Association IAFF Local 344 has filed suit against the city in an effort to block implementation of a policy requiring firefighters to wash down blood and bodily fluids at accident and medical scenes. The lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court seeks to block implementation of the “Bodily Fluid Aftermath Cleanup" policy.

Detroit Fire Terminates EMS Personnel Over Neglect Of Care Allegation

The Detroit Fire Department has terminated two EMS personnel based on allegations they failed to perform CPR on a 30-year-old man in January. Patrick Clemons was suffering from a heart attack and according to his family, EMS personnel made him walk to the stretcher then then failed to administer aid to him during the transport.

Family Suing Detroit Fire Over Fire Death

The family of a man who died in a house fire last March has filed suit against the Detroit Fire Department. Kevin McGriff, 26, died in the fire, but firefighters apparently missed locating his body. Five days later his body was located by his father who had stopped by the building to search for insurance papers.

Detroit Firefighter Loses Reverse Discrimination Appeal

The Michigan Court of Appeals has rejected the appeal of a Detroit firefighter who claims he failed his probationary period as a lieutenant on account of his race and disability discrimination. Toby O’Brien claims his demotion in 2014 was attributable to his dyslexia and because he is white.

Detroit EMT Convicted of Wilful Neglect

Former Detroit Fire Department EMT Ann Marie Thomas was convicted of willful neglect charges for failing to respond to an incident in 2015 that led to the death of an eight-month-old girl. Thomas was reportedly less than a mile from the scene and took six minutes to drive there. She then parked her unit on a street corner away from the residence while waiting for other units to arrive.
