Former IAFF Local 330 treasurer Joseph Ruhlin, 41, was sentenced yesterday to two years in prison for stealing an estimated $500,000 from his brother and sister firefighters.

Two Akron firefighters who “were known to be in a long-term relationship” have been relieved of duty as the city investigates allegations that they made a porn video in one of the city’s firehouses. Ellen Lander Nischt, a spokesperson for Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan, confirmed the allegations and the investigation today. The video was reportedly posted online.

A nine-year long dispute that has held up promotions in the Akron Fire Department is finally over with news that the city has agreed to pay 23 firefighters $1.04 million in back pay and interest. The suit, Howe et al v. City of Akron, was filed in November, 2006 by 31 firefighters alleging that a 2004 promotional test was discriminatory against black candidates for lieutenant and white candidates for captain.

The Akron Fire Department is facing possible contempt proceedings over its efforts to negotiate a new promotional process with Akron Firefighters, IAFF Local 330. The department has been prevented from promoting new officers by the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio as it wrestles with a discrimination/reverse discrimination suit brought by 31 firefighters in 2006.

An article published today by the Akron Beacon/Ohio.com raises serious concerns about the inadvertent impact that a discrimination suit is having on the safety of firefighters in the Akron Fire Department. The suit over promotional examinations that took place in 2004 has paralyzed the department, leaving just 68 of 120 officer’s positions filled.
